    Description :
    A bank cheque, made payable to Lt E.T Bridges for the sum of 2.15
    Dated 3rd June 1869, early
    in Grant's term as President. Clearly signed by Grant.
    With a chip at the bottom, the usual cancellation marks and a small
    faded are in the place of the removed stamp. Accompanied by a CDV of Lt Gen. Grant.

    Ulysses S. Grant
    , was an American military officer and politician who served
    as the 18th President of The United States
    from 1869 to 1877. As president, Grant was an effective civil rights executive who created the Justice Department
    and worked
    with the
    Republican to protect African Americans during
    reconstruction
    .
    As Commanding General,
    he led the UNION ARMY
    to victory in the American Civil War
    in 1865 and thereafter briefly served as secretary of War.
    A war hero, drawn in by his sense of duty, Grant was unanimously nominated by the Republican Party and was Elected President in 1868.
    Under Grant, the Union was completely restored. He appointed African Americans and Jewish Americans to prominent federal offices.
    In 1871 Grant created the first Civil Service
    Commission, advancing civil service more than any prior President.

    On March 4, 1869, Grant was sworn in as the eighteenth President of the United States by Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase
    . In his inaugural address, Grant urged the
    ratification of the FIFTEENTH AMENDMENT
    , while large numbers of African Americans attended his inauguration.
    He also urged that bonds issued during
    the Civil War should
    be paid in gold and called for "proper treatment" of Native Americans
    and encouraged their "civilization and ultimate citizenship".
