PRESIDENT RUTHERFORD B. HAYES - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/21/1876 - HFSID 5240
RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Rutherford B. Hayes sends an autograph letter of regret that he is not able accept the request.
Autograph Letter Signed: "
Sincerely/RB Hayes
"
as Governor of Ohio and the Republican Party's candidate for President
, ¾p, 5½x8¼ lined sheet.
Columbus, Ohio, 1876 July 21. Headed:
"
Private
".
To O.N. Hartshorn, whom Hayes has noted to be
"
President &c &c
".
Begins:
"
My Dear Sir
".
In full
: "
I regret that it is simply impossible to comply with the request contained in your esteemed form of the 18th. I beg you to receive my hasty acknowledgement for the honor implied at your institution
."
Written the month after Hayes had been nominated for President at the Republican National Convention (held June 14-16, 1876 at Cincinnati's Exposition Hall) and less than four months before Hayes became President in the closest electoral vote election in U.S. history.
On November 7, 1876, Republican Governor RUTHERFORD B. HAYES (1822-1893) of Ohio defeated Democratic Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York
in an election where 20 disputed electoral votes of four states eventually went to Hayes.
Tilden had more popular votes
(4.3 million to 4.0 million), but
Hayes won more states
, 21-17, and
received 185 votes to Tilden's 184 votes in the Electoral College.
Hayes resigned as Governor of Ohio on March 2, 1877, the day a special Electoral Commission declared him the winner just two days before his presidential term began. Hayes, who served as
19th U.S. President from 1877-1881
, declined to run for a second term in 1880. He had previously been e
lected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1865 to July 20, 1867,
when he resigned upon his nomination for Governor of Ohio.
Hayes served as Governor of Ohio
from 1868-1872 and 1876-1877, during which time he wrote this letter.
O.N. HARTSHORN
was the
founder and first President of Mt. Union College
, which he founded in Alliance, Ohio in 1846. The college, which he saw as a "cosmic institution for the people", included a museum, Hartshorn's pride and joy. Lightly creased. Folds, not at signature. Separations at blank left margin at upper horizontal fold and blank right margin at mid-horizontal fold have been repaired with tape. Tape stains at these repairs and at lower blank margin, which is lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
