    .  Rare autograph letter signed by Richard Nixon as, “Dick,” to his close friend, Bonnie Swearingen, congratulating her on assisting with Ronald Reagan’s recent 1984 landslide victory, discussing his daughter Tricia, and joking about his old age: “While Pat & I will be unable to attend your birthday party I want to send you the note of congratulation & our hope that you will enjoy many happy returns in the year ahead.  Yesterday was Tricia’s 39th birthday.  I told her I couldn’t believe that she was that old or even that I was!  That goes for you too.  You are blessed with beauty & spirit which will never get old.”

    Swearingen was a famous Mid-Western socialite who was married to Standard Oil CEO John Swearingen, formerly the most powerful oil executive in the world.  She headed both charity and political fundraisers allowing her to befriend several U.S. Presidents, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush.  Swearingen raised millions of dollars for Reagan’s 1984 presidential campaign and attended his second inauguration.

    Handwritten letters from Nixon are extremely rare and highly desirable with one signed as president commanding as much as ,500 at Christie’s in December 2013.  The letter is one page on personal letterhead, measures 9.75 by 5.25 inches, created in New York City on February 22, 1985, and in near fine condition with only minor toning to the top and right borders and minor evidence of mounting on the verso.
