This is an authentic, vintage Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Seal Ronson Lighter gifted to a senior staff member who worked in the White House.
The front of lighter is emblazoned with the Presidential Seal in gold. The lighter is in excellent vintage condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. All parts appear to be present, however, the lighter has not been tested to determine functionality. A
s a historical collectible, the lighter is not meant for regular use -- as such use would adversely affect its commercial value. Accordingly, this item is sold strictly as-is, and no warranty of functionality is given or implied.
Of the various brands and models of lighters ordered and issued by the LBJ White House, Ronson lighters were ordered in the smallest quantity. Their cost-per-unit was the highest, as the metallic Presidential Seal not only had to be manufactured separately, it also had to be precisely placed and permanently fixed to each lighter. Accordingly, President Johnson reserved these for VIP visitors to the White House.
Apollo 11 Astronaut Neil Armstrong kept the Ronson Presidential Seal lighter given to him by LBJ for the rest of his life. After his death, Armstrong's sons liquidated their father's estate and the Ronson lighter was put up for auction via Heritage Auctions. Since being sold in 2018 for thousands of dollars, the Ronson was recently re-sold for nearly ,000.
Original Ronson Presidential Lighters issued by the White House and distributed by Lyndon Johnson are exceedingly rare and virtually impossible to find today. In the rare instances one comes to market, it always commands and extraordinary sum.
