IMPORTANT TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY JOHN F. KENNEDY AS PRESIDENT TO U.S. SENATOR AND SEGREGATIONIST LEADER HARRY F. BYRD
President Kennedy notifies Senator Byrd of his meetings with British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan: “I am extremely sorry that I was unable to be with you on Sunday, but inasmuch as the Prime Minister was planning on leaving for Canada Sunday afternoon we did not go down to Glen Ora this past weekend. I want you to know, however, how much I appreciated your very kind invitation.” Kennedy met with Prime Minister Macmillan in Washington, DC between April 27 to 29, 1962 to discuss classified topics, primarily nuclear weapons testing. Macmillan then continued talks on the testing with Candadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker in Ottawa in May 1962.
