Description
James Abram Garfield [1831 1881] was an American politician, general of the United States Army and Civil War veteran who served as the 20th President of the United States. President James Garfield was elected to office on March 4, 1881 and was assassinated on September 19, 1881 at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. by a disappointed office seeker named Charles J. Guiteau. Listed for auction is a stunning display which contains a authenticated [ALS] autograph letter signed by President James Abram Garfield. The letter is dated Menton, Ohio Nov 19th, 1880 and reads as follows, ''Dear Sir, Your letter of the 15th came duly to hand. Accept my thanks for your congratulations. Very truly yours ''J.A. Garfield'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 7.25 x 5.00 inches, it has even toning otherwise it is in fine condition and will be accompanied with its original transmittal envelope which is also addressed in the presidents hand. The autograph is authentic and the letter has been authenticated by JSA James Spence Authentication Services and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display is centered around a striking b/w portrait of President Garfield. Mounted next to the photograph is the letter as described above and mounted below is a professionally engraved plaque which reads as follows, ''20th President of the United States of America. James Garfield November 19, 1831 - September 19, 1881. Serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. The display itself is stunning and has been professionally assembled as follows. Each item within the display has been triple matted in a blue/white outer linen matte and accented with a grey and a blue inner matte. The display has been completed in a quality ornate silver wood frame to the dimensions 16.00 x 15.00 inches. Absolutely no disappointments with this display, the letter is a desirable example of our 20th President, authenticated and the display will be a wonderful addition to any collection.
