PRESIDENT JAMES E. "JIMMY" CARTER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 09/02/1976 - HFSID 72733
JIMMY CARTER
Jimmy Carter sends a typed letter of thanks for the contribution and to ask for more money.
Typed Letter Signed: "
Jimmy Carter
", 1p, 7¼x10½.
Plains, Georgia
,
1976 September 2.
On his personal stationery
to Mr. Edward Lamb, Toledo, Ohio
.
In full:
"
Bernard Rapoport told me of your generous help in the past. I just want to say that I hope we can count on your help for a Democratic Victory this year. I am relying on the Democratic National Committee to raise for the Campaign their goal of million which will be distributed as follows: .2 million will be spent in connection with my presidential election campaign, approximately million will be distributed in behalf of those Congressmen and Senators running for election on the Democratic ticket and the remaining will be spent for voter registration. I am convinced that the Party can raise this allowable supplemental money which could be a very decisive edge in tightly contested states. I think you will agree that the Democratic National Committee must do less so that
all
of our candidates can compete with the Republicans on an equal financial footing. That is why I will be doing everything I can to help in this all-important effort, and why I hope you will do the same. Bernie will be calling you in the next few days. I hope you will tell him that our Party can count on your contribution. Sincerely
".
James Earl "Jimmy" Carter
(born in 1924) served as
39th U.S. President
from 1977-1981. He was the
only one-term Democratic President of the 20th century
and the
first Democrat not to be reelected
since Grover Cleveland in 1888. Carter, the
only U.S. President to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (1946, at the age of 21)
, is also the only U.S. President to serve a full four-year term without making an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. He won the
2002 Nobel Peace Prize
for his diplomatic efforts both during and after his presidency.
A month after graduating from the Naval Academy, Carter married
Rosalynn Smith.
During the next seven years, Carter served aboard battleships and submarines, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
On July 23, 1953, his father, James Earl Carter, Sr., died at the age of 58. Lieutenant Commander Carter resigned from the Navy to rejoin the family peanut farm and warehouse business in Plains.
From 1955-1962, he was
Chairman of the Sumter County Board of Education.
After serving two terms in the
Georgia State Senate
, Carter ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1966. Four years later, he ran again and won, serving as
Governor of Georgia
from 1971-1975. On December 12, 1974, Jimmy Carter announced that he was seeking the 1976 Democratic nomination for President. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
