JAMES A. GARFIELD. Historically important autograph letter signed by, “J.A. Garfield,” as the Republican nominee reflecting on the outcome of the 1880 presidential election on the eve of election day. Garfield plans to retaliate against his opponents after the election whether he wins or loses. He would go on to win, take the oath of office on March 4, 1881, and serve only six months until his assassination.
HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY JAMES A. GARFIELD AS THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE REFLECTING ON THE OUTCOME OF THE 1880 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION ON THE EVE OF ELECTION DAY
The letter reads in full: “Yours of the 29th Oct., camy duly To hand and was read with pleasure. If those who have worn themselves out in assaults upon me knew how little they had accomplished in the way of disturbing my equanimity and peace I think they would have saved their breath for more effective work. I don’t of course know what tomorrow will bring forth but I am very certain that one way or another I shall be able to get even with these people.”

I DON’T OF COURSE KNOW WHAT TOMORROW WILL BRING FORTH BUT I AM VERY CERTAIN THAT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I SHALL BE ABLE TO GET EVEN WITH THESE PEOPLE.”
Correspondence from Garfield discussing the election are virtually nonexistent and highly desirable. The letter was written to Albert Mansfield Pratt (a close friend to Garfield who served as the mayor of Bryan, Ohio), contains one page on personal letterhead, measures by inches, created in Mentor, Ohio on November 1, 1880, and in very good condition with toning, minor staining, and having been laminated.
