    Description

Ike congratulates Lt. Gen. Clarence Huebner, commander of "The Bid Red One"
A fine association Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed as "Ike E." on his "DDE" letterhead, 1p. 4to, Nov. 21, 1950 to Lt. Gen. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER
CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972). Huebner commanded the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the "Big Red One", during the D-Day landings where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and he joined his men on the beach the same day. The division was instrumental in the breakthrough following the battle for St. Lo and in foiling the German counteroffensive at Mortain. After experiencing heavy fighting in the Huertgen Forest, the division briefly rested but soon returned to counter the German offensive at the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944.
As Huebner retires from the Army, Ike writes his old comrade: "...Before you take off for 'parts unknown' (if that is part of your retirement plan), I wish to extend to you my congratulations on a job well done and my best wishes for your happiness and success in the field of avocation you now choose..." Ike also wished his friend a happy birthday. Fine condition, with transmittal envelope.
