    Preface:
THE year 1898 has, on the whole, been a prosperous one for the railway interests, owing, mainly to the favourable condition of the Home Trade, which has been considerably stimulated by the conclusion of the engineering strike, and the large Government orders for war material and ship building. Interesting events in the Home Railway World have been the conclusion of the joint purse arrangement between the South Eastern and the London, Chatham, and Dover Companies; the rapid approach towards completion of the Great Central's line to London; the opening of the Waterloo and City; and the near completion of the Central London Electric lines.
Amongst new capital issues the most important have been the issue of ,500,000 of ordinary stock by the Great Western in June, and ,250,000 by the Caledonian in July.
American Railways have had an exceptionally prosperous year, and further progress has been made in the matter of reorganisations, notably, with those of the Baltimore and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio South Western, and the Central Pacific, and additional features have been the absorption of the Lake Shore and Michigan Central by the New York Central; and the payments of dividends on the preferred stocks of several of the companies but recently reorganised. Events contributing to this prosperity have been the termination of the war with Spain; good crops; and the defeat of the Silver Party at the elections. There has been a greater expansion in American Railroad construction during the past year than for any year since 1892, in which year the new mileage amounted to 4,419, whilst last year's (1898) is estimated at 2,8671 miles, distributed generally throughout the country, and the prospects of extension for the year 1899 are more promising than in any year of recent times.
Foreign, and particularly Argentine Railways, have also experienced good times, with the result of enhanced dividends.
Canadian lines have continued the improvement commenced in the previous year
