Description
Lovely pair of oleographs by engraver E.C. Middleton of George and Martha Washington. In the mid-19th century, Middleton produced a series of oleographs of notable individuals in a process of chromolithography using oil based ink that closely resembled the actual oil paintings upon which they were based. These portraits of George and Martha Washington, based upon the oil paintings by Gilbert Stuart, were produced in 1863 and 1864 respectively, with the oleograph mounted to canvas. With Middleton's information to verso of the canvasses. In ornate gilt frames, possibly original, measuring 19" x 22" each.
