Description
Exceptionally rare and historically important, 1868 Autograph Album containing the Autographs of Presidents Andrew Johnson and James A. Garfield and Vice Presidents Henry Wilson and Schuyler Colfax as well members of Andrew Johnson’s cabinet and 221 members of the 40th United States Congress including numerous Civil War Generals!!This simply amazing collection of autographs was assembled in 1868 – just 3 months after Andrew Johnson’s impeachment. We believe it was assemblen by Connecticut Governor William A. Buckingham as the Album came to us with an autograph letter signed by Buckingham informing someone that he would be traveling to Washington, D. C.
The Album itself measures approx. 5” by 7 1/2” and is bound in an embossed, brown leather with gold gilt decoration. The Album contains approx. 120 leaves with autographs signed on the recto only of the first approx 70 leaves.
The first pages of the Album contain signatures of members of the Executive Branch followed by Senators of the 40th Congress, which are followed by Members by the House of Representatives. A few signatures bear the date of 1868 (including President Andrew Johnson’s), which identifies this as an Album of Signatures from the 40th Congress. Of the 68 Senators in that body, there are signatures of 45 here; of the 226 Representatives, there are 176 there and additionally there is the Autograph of Andrew Johnson and 6 members of his Cabinet.
A sampling of the Autographs include: Andrew Johnson, President; William H Seward, Secretary of State; Hugh McCulloch, Secretary of the Treasury; Orville Hickman Browning, Secretary of the Interior; John Schofield, Secretary of War; Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy; Benjamin F. Wade (Ohio), President Pro Tempore of Senate; Charles Sumner, Sen. Mass; John Sherman, Sen., Ohio (anti-trust bills and William Tecumseh Sherman's brother); Frederick Frelinghuysen, Sen. New Jersey; Reverdy Johnson, Sen. Mass.; Schuyler Colfax, Speaker of the House; Benjamin Butler, Civil War General and Rep. Mass.; James A. Garfield, Rep. Ohio and future President; Thaddeus Stevens, Rep. PA. There are likely more Generals, and certainly many veterans of the Civil War in this group. 63 Confederate and 81 Union veterans became Senators after the war (www.senate.gov) and certainly as many in the House, influencing politics for decades. A complete list of all of the Signatures in the Album will be added to this listing)
All of the Autographs contained here are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and original. Each and every one of the Signatures and the Album itself are backed by our “no questions asked” return policy and lifetime guarantee of authenticity. The Signatures are unconditionally guaranteed to be deemed authentic by any third party authentication service and the Album will be accompanied by our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our unconditional return policy and guarantee of authenticity.
This Historically Important Autograph Album is in good to very good condition. It is bound in its original blind stamped and gilt decorated leather covers which are worn and damaged at the spine. The interior pages appear complete although the binding is shaken and some of the leaves loose (we would be happy to refer the buyer to our bookbinder who could restore the binding beautifully). The vast majority of the signatures are executed in brown, iron gall ink and all are dark and bold and very attractive. There are some scattered, ink smudges that most certainly occurred when the Album was being signed but overall this is in exceptional collection of beautiful Autographs.
An exceptionally rare and historically important, 1868 Autograph Album containing the Autographs of Presidents Andrew Johnson and James A. Garfield as well members of Andrew Johnson’s cabinet and 221 members of the 40th United States Congress and worthy of a place at the center of even the most advanced, museum quality Presidential Autograph Collection!!
We are proud to offer this important Autograph Album here, as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves!!!
